A vital element to the success of TIA’s strategy to deliver on its mandate is continuous engagement with various stakeholders in the National System of Innovation (NSI), industry and the public sector. This is achieved through establishing mutually beneficial partnerships and collaborating with like-minded organisations, locally and internationally, with an interest in strengthening the innovation ecosystem.

Strategic partnerships and collaborations support the deepening of technological cooperation between TIA and various organisations focusing on innovation. Through this network of partners TIA is involved in various initiatives, such as:

RDI Programme for Technology Development and Commercialisation

The development and implementation of a joint RDI Programme for co-funding of joint technology development and commercialisation initiatives and projects by researchers and SMMEs.

Market Access, Fundraising and Networking

Establish and implement mechanisms and initiatives to promote market access and fund-raising opportunities for researchers and SMMEs.

Technology Transfer

Promote the establishment of partnerships between South African innovators and international community to encourage the localization of inbound technologies and knowledge exchange.

Knowledge Exchange

Promote knowledge exchange and experience sharing amongst innovation supporting agencies locally and internationally.

Ecosystem Builder

Promote mechanisms to reduce a fragmented national system of innovation in South Africa.

Institutional Collaboration

Create opportunities for institutional knowledge exchange and capacity building between parties including industry.

Local partnerships

Strategic Partnerships at local and international level are an important enabler for TIA to succeed in executing its mandate. These partnerships contribute significant collateral capital in the form of funding, skills, market access, technology development capabilities and facilities.

International partnerships

The Decadal Plan emphasizes a shift in internationalisation from a singular focus on R&D to a science diplomacy approach focused on promoting collaboration on innovation. TIA has established and put in place partnerships with institutions from several countries around the world, in both developed and developing countries, including Africa, to pursue strategic objectives.
