HEALTH SECTOR

The Health Business sector aims to enhance South Africa’s global competitiveness in the health arena and to deliver socio-economic value through technological innovation in healthcare products and services, addressing the diagnosis, prevention and /or treatment of priority disease areas within South Africa. It further seeks to stimulate and support the development, registration, manufacture and commercialisation of products and services which address the healthcare needs of the country and support the local industry.

Objective

To improve the competitiveness of the Health industry by leveraging expertise and skills across the country through cooperation and collaborations
To accelerate technology development and commercialisation of Health products and services through existing or new enterprises
To leverage funds from local and international institutions to advance the strategic goal of the Health NSI

Services

Source investments and provide funding for technology innovative opportunities
Drive commercialisation and exploitation of technology innovative opportunities
Promote national and local technology innovation agenda through thought leadership initiatives
Participate, co-ordinate and contribute to building the Health NSI and seek alignment with key stakeholders

AGRICULTURE

Agriculture in South Africa forms a critical part of the country’s socio-economic and socio-political stability, with a large percentage of the population’s livelihood dependant on the need to build a globally competitive sector that will be able to withstand incoming agricultural produce from the rest of the world. This sector is central to the National Development Plan where the Government aims to eliminate income poverty from 39% to 0% and reduce inequality by reducing the Gini Coefficient from 0.69 to 0.6.

Objective

Supporting the creation of an enabling environment for agricultural technology innovation;
Supporting the development and demonstration of attractive agricultural technology innovations;
Facilitating commercialisation of de-risked technologies; and
Improving the diffusion of appropriate agricultural technologies to small-scale and emerging farmers.

SABDI

SABDI is a Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) – contracted fund which supports collaborative and integrative research projects that focus on functional genomics, structural biology, synthetic biology and systems biology. SABDI is particularly interested in bridging the physical, computational, engineering and life science disciplines.

Objective

Foster high end cross-disciplinary, transformational skills development in SABDI areas
Encourage postgraduate study in SABDI areas
Fund projects that have cross-functional application
Encourage collaborations between academia, industry and government
Commercialise suitable technologies for job creation

TECHNOLOGY PLATFORM PROGRAMME

Technology Platform Programme (TPP) exists to facilitate access to cutting edge technological capabilities by investing in and supporting entities to acquire appropriate technologies and expertise that in turn lower the barriers for others to innovate. The programme identifies and co-develops opportunities and funds and supports Technology Platforms to build long-term technological capabilities in the National System of Innovation (NSI).

Objective

Create and enable access to life science infrastructure and services, to support development and commercialisation of life science research projects, products and services
Accelerate the commercialisation and uptake of platform research projects and technologies

Services

Infrastructure Support: allocate funding to High Education Institutions (HEIs) to procure life science infrastructure that supports prototype development and advancement of technologies from Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 3-7
Support commercialisation of platform research projects
Create a Centre of Excellence and competency in the life science industry

TECHNOLOGY INNOVATION CLUSTER PROGRAMME

The Technology Innovation Cluster Programmes are collaborative programmes aimed at leveraging the strengths of multiple partners to drive a technology solution and alleviate common industry specific pain points, lowering the hurdles to support economic growth.

Objective

To facilitate, catalyse and enable vibrant and competitive industries of national priority through:
Stimulating and integrating strong Regional Development Institutions (RDI) competence across private and public institutions through resource pooling, collaborative RDI effort, and knowledge exchange
Promoting human capital and capacity development to ensure continued skills development
Supporting the creation of a coherent policy, legislative and regulatory environment

Services

To support the creation of multi-disciplinary clusters along a technology development value chain with multi-stakeholders fulfilling different functions
To drive the identification and achievement of common cluster objectives in a coherent manner
To design key cluster initiatives which include:
Technology incubatory access and support
Business incubatory access and support
Access to funding
Enabling interventions
To maintain, monitor and evaluate the on-going evolution of clusters created
