The purpose of the Living Labs Pilot Programme is to stimulate local innovation and entrepreneurship in marginalised communities. This is an 18-month programme funded by the Department of Science and Technology as part of its Innovation for Local Economic Development Strategy. The programme will augment the development of Living Labs in South Africa as a model to foster co-creative innovation to stimulate local economic development.
Living Labs encompasses the idea of creating an open innovation environment, also referred to as an ecosystem or platform, that offers users the opportunity to actively participate in the co-creation of innovation products and services. The Call for Proposals for the Living Labs Pilot Programme is targeted at entrepreneurs and entities that are able to implement innovative solutions to solve local challenges within the context of a Living Lab in a rural, township or peri-urban context.
